One of the most significant writers of 20th Century, Manik Bandyopadhyay was born on May 19, 1908 in Dumka. His original name was Prabodh Kumar Bandyopadhyay. His inclination towards literature started at an early age while in school. His first story ‘Atasimami’ was a successful step towards his literary career. The notable aspect of his writings is that they explore the complicated psychological state of human beings. He was one of the few authors who could broke the dominancy of Rabindranath Tagore, and Saratchandra Chattopadhyay in Bengali literature. Some of his well-known novels are ‘Janani’, ‘Dinaratrir Kavya’, ‘Putul Nacher Itikotha’, ‘Padma Nadir Majhi’, etc. and some short stories are ‘Pragoitihasik’, ‘Shailaja Shila’, ‘Atmahatyar Adhikar’, ‘Aaj Kal Porshur Galpo’, etc. His famous novel, ‘Padma Nadir Majhi’ was translated into many Indian languages as well as other foreign languages. He died on December 3, 1956.
